Slattern is the biggest, smartest, most resilient of the Kaiju, far more formidable than any foe the Jaegers were conceived to battle. Says del Toro: "I wanted very much for the final Kaiju to be the devil. I always loved very much that moment in Fantasia when Chernabog opens his wings in Night on Bald Mountain." Slattern's fight with Gipsy Danger, tumbling around volcanic vents near the seabed, certainly had a hellish feel.
"I wanted him to come out from the depths of the ocean, and his head to not be horns but evoke that," says del Toro. "It has a real mean intelligence. He is the only real Kaiju whose head looks like a real crown, so it has majesty. I wanted very much to have him be clearly the king of the Kaiju."
To establish his size, Slattern even gets an entrance shot reminiscent of the dragon Vermithrax in Dragonslayer.
Slattern's chief weapons are his whip-like tails. Del Toro advised the animators to think of a kung fu master in a martial arts movie using magical canes. "[Del Toro] wanted a similar sort of feeling for the way Slattern swirls his tails around in the water in a circular way," says Hal Hickel. "You don't quite know what it's doing with them, and then suddenly they can just splash out and strike."

WHAT WE LEARN FROM THE GAME;

• Slattern is capable of walking on two legs, however it heavily hampers his speed.
• Despite being able to walk on two legs he does require at least three legs on the ground for some attacks, and all four for his more powerful ones.
